How to Feel Confident & Comfortable in Front of the Camera for Your Senior Photos

I get it—being in front of the camera can feel awkward, especially if you’re not used to it. But here’s the thing: your senior photo session isn’t about posing perfectly or looking like someone you’re not. It’s about capturing you—your personality, your style, and this exciting time in your life. As a Finger Lakes senior photographer, my goal is to make your session feel relaxed, fun, and totally you. So if you’re feeling nervous, don’t worry—I’ve got you! Here are my best tips for feeling confident and comfortable during your senior photos.

1. Wear Something That Feels Like You

The best outfit for your senior session? Something that makes you feel amazing. Forget what’s trendy or what you think you should wear—pick something that feels natural and comfortable. A flowy dress, a classic jeans-and-tee combo, or something totally unique that represents your personality? Go for it. Bonus points if it makes you want to twirl, dance, or laugh!

2. Choose a Location That Feels Right

The Finger Lakes is full of gorgeous spots for senior photos—lakefronts, golden fields, cute downtown streets, and more. Think about where you feel the most comfortable. Love the water? Let’s do a session by the lake. Prefer a nature trail or an open field? Perfect. A spot that means something to you will make your session feel more personal and natural. Shot we can make it a full adventure and do it all!

3. Bring a Friend for Hype & Laughs

Everything is better with a bestie, right? Bringing a friend, sibling, or even a parent who hypes you up can make the session feel way more relaxed. They can help with outfit changes, make you laugh, and even jump in for a few fun behind-the-scenes shots. Better yet? At the end we can even sneak in a shot or two with them!

4. No Idea How to Pose? Don’t Worry—That’s My Job!

One of the biggest concerns I hear is, “I don’t know how to pose.” But guess what? You don’t have to! I’ll guide you through everything, from natural movements to fun prompts that bring out your real smiles and personality. No stiff, awkward posing here—I promise.

5. Play Your Favorite Music Before the Session

A good playlist can change everything. Whether you love country, indie, pop, or old-school throwbacks, playing music before your session (or even during!) can help you relax and get in the right mindset. Plus, if you have a song that makes you feel like a main character, let’s blast it!

6. Have Fun With It!

Senior photos aren’t about standing still and smiling at the camera the whole time. I want you to move, laugh, twirl, run your hands through your hair—just be yourself. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and having fun, so don’t overthink it. Let’s make this a good time!

7. Trust Me—I've Got You

If you’re feeling unsure or nervous, take a deep breath and know that I’ve got you. My job is to make sure you look and feel amazing. I’ll guide you the whole way so you never feel awkward or unsure. All you have to do is show up, be yourself, and enjoy the experience.
